The National Accounts Senior Underwriter is responsible for the profitability of an assigned book of business (at a minimum: $500 million in Medical premium /premium equivalent and 150,000 Medical members.)

Assist in the training of junior associates, will support management reports, and will participate in the development projects to improve underwriting operations. Participate in the multi-disciplined development of Health Informatics for Accounts (HIA)reports and in consultative presentation to clients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain account profitability, enrollment levels and support Sales' customer relationship building efforts by participating at client meetings.
  • Develop rationale for increases in costs including trend factors and underlying influence of account specific utilization patterns using HIA report data analysis.
  • Develop accurate and timely calculations in support of creative pricing strategies to achieve profitability and market share targets.
  • Negotiate prices with customers and their consultants and brokers to retain and grow enrollment and meet profitability goals.
  • Analyze and effectively present comparative value advantages of submitted bid.
  • Participate in the development of reports, contribute to multi-disciplined analysis and present on a consultative basis actionable recommendations.
  • Participate actively in Renewal, new Sales and Health
    Informatics consultative presentations to existing and prospective
    policyholders and brokers/consultants.


Key Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree required; Masters degree preferred
  • Proven experience in National underwriting with clients in the over 5,000 lives market.
  • Minimum of seven years underwriting or consulting experience is required.
  • Must possess superior oral and written communication skills to support value concepts and negotiate clients, consultants, and sales staff.
  • Must have an extensive knowledge of Group Health benefit programs and financial arrangements from both a risk and benefits plan efficacy aspect.
  • Creative problem solving ability is required.
  • Strong PC skills.
  • Must be able to relate renewal information to medical outcome report analysis.
